13-Year-Old Charged With Threatening Middle School Shooting

A 13-year-old Montgomery County middle school student has been charged with making threats against Parkland Middle School.

Parkland administrators received phone calls March 17 from a person saying they intended to carry out a school shooting, according to Montgomery County Police.

Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) officials notified police, and school community engagement officers went to the Rockville campus.

That school, as well as the nearby Brookhaven Elementary School, was put on shelter-in-place status.

An investigation by the police’s Behavioral Assessment Unit identified the caller as a 13-year-old male student from a different middle school. The juvenile has been charged with threats of mass violence and disruption of school activities.

Because the suspect is a minor, the case will be handled by the Department of Juvenile Services.
