136 nonprofits, faith organizations and houses of worship in Montgomery County were awarded $900,000 in security grants in an effort to deter hate crimes.
The funding can go toward security personnel, security planning, training and new security cameras. The county’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security administers the funds.
The council approved the funding last year, according to the county. The county has provided the grants in previous years. This year’s funding is an increase from last year, when the county announced in Jan. 2023 that 91 religious facilities and nonprofits would receive $800,000 to address security needs as officials said hate/bias incidents persisted.
