15-Hour Standoff in Bethesda Ends With Police Officer Hospitalized

A 15-hour incident that required heavy police presence and road closures in Bethesda was the result of a Montgomery County police officer in distress.

The officer currently is receiving medical care following the Sunday through Monday event that led to the closure of a section of Potomac Tennis Lane at Falls Road in Bethesda.

According to a police report, the incident began when the officer’s supervisor noticed unusual behavior during a scheduled shift. Police officers later contacted the officer, who police did not name, while he was in a patrol car near Falls Road and Potomac Tennis Lane.

During the next 15 hours, law enforcement and other support teams worked to communicate with the officer “and bring the situation to a peaceful resolution,” according to the police report.

Several units from the police department, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and the Department of Health and Human Services were involved in the standoff.

It culminated at 6:09 p.m. Monday with the officer being taken to an area hospital, where he currently is receiving care.

“The Montgomery County Department of Police appreciates the community’s patience and understanding during this time,” officers wrote in the news release.
