Two Montgomery County school librarians are in the running for a state award.
Media specialists Lisa Hack (Silver Spring International Middle School) and Melissa King (Flower Hill Elementary School) are finalists for Maryland’s School Librarian of the Year award, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) said Tuesday.
“The recognition honors a school librarian for exemplary service and outstanding achievements in the field of school library media,” according to the press release.
King told MCM she was “thrilled and humbled” to have been nominated. She entered the school librarian field after developing a love of books as a child, she said.
“The library is just such an amazing place of learning…it’s just a happy place for me,” she said. “It always has been.”
Hack, who’s in her 23rd year at MCPS, echoed King’s experience.
“School libraries were the place that I gravitated to when I was a kid…I would eat every lunch in my school library, and that was my hangout and my safe space,” she said.
King said the finalists need to go through an interview process, present a proposal and complete other steps before the final awards are announced.
“There’s still a long way to go before the final decision is made,” she said.
