Two individuals police confirmed were not students at Bowie State University (BSU) were sent to the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds late Sunday night on BSU’s campus.
The shooting occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police have yet to identify the two 19-year-old victims who were found outside the campus’ Center for Business and Graduate Studies and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In a press conference held Monday morning, Superintendent of the Maryland State Police Roland L. Butler stressed that “there is no threat to the public at this time” as he stated that preliminary investigations believed the shooting to be an isolated incident. The investigation is still ongoing.
During a weekend marked by homecoming celebrations for BSU, students from Morgan State University (MSU) were invited to attend the festivities after their own homecoming activities were canceled according to WBAL.
Sunday’s shooting comes just days after another shooting at MSU where five people were injured.
In a statement released by BSU’s President Aminta Breaux, “It is exceedingly disturbing that gun violence is increasingly finding its way into the safe havens of our university campuses,” Breaux said. “While the significant increase of police and security officers throughout the Bowie State campus this weekend enabled a quick response to the scene, the fact that individuals brazenly discharged a weapon is disheartening.”
Assistant Bureau Chief of the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division Major Kenny Brown told reporters that a weapon was recovered, but did not release details about the weapon in the interest of the ongoing investigation. Maj. Brown did not go into details regarding a possible suspect but said that they have several leads that they are following.
Maj. Brown asked the public and students to send any information they may have to Bowie State University’s tip line at 301-860-4688.
