Twelve federal employees, including three from Montgomery County, are 2023 Arthur S. Flemming Award recipients.
They are honored for accomplishments in science and leadership fields that have benefited the nation.
Dr. Douglas Morton of Chevy Chase, who works in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); Nancy Tian of Rockville, who works in the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Dr. M. Khair ElZarrad of Silver Spring, who also works in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will be honored Nov. 13 at the 75th annual Arthur S. Flemming Awards.
Morton is being recognized for developing and launching Amazon Dashboard, which uses NASA satellite data to track fire activity and provide real-time information about deforestation fires and forest fires.
Tian is being honored for leading the modernization of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research informatics platform and overseeing teams to streamline data management and regulatory news. As a U.S. Public Health Service Officer, she played key roles in COVID-19 missions.
ElZarrad is being acknowledged for his career advancing national and global medical research policies that enhance patient access, promote diversity in clinical trials and encourage responsible use of innovative technologies. He modernized the Good Clinical Practice Guideline.
Established in 1948, the award is named after Arthur Sherwood Flemming, a government official who served seven presidential administrations, was president of three higher-ed institutions, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was a fierce advocate for social and racial equity.
These awards are hosted by the George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration in partnership with the National Academy of Public Administration.
