5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 19, In Montgomery County

1. Countdown to the First Day of School: In one week, more than 160,000 students will start or return to school. Families may find these resources helpful:

2. Check Before You Go: Many recreation facilities close this week for cleaning. Swim centers closed this week include the Martin Luther King Jr. Swim Center, closed through Sept. 2, and the Olney Swim Center, closed through Aug. 25. The East County, Long Branch, Mid-County, Plum Gar, Upper County, and Wheaton recreation centers are closed for cleaning through Aug. 25.

3. Life-Sized Angry Birds: Children 6 years old and up can play a life-sized version of Angry Birds at Olney Library. Help the Angry Birds rescue their eggs from the Green Pigs on Monday, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Olney Library. Register here.

4. Council Recess: The County Council is in recess and will resume regular business in September.

5. Municipal Monday:  The Gaithersburg Mayor and Council do not meet today. Their next session is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m.
The Rockville Mayor and Council also do not meet today. Their next gathering is a retreat on Monday, Aug. 26, at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.
