Today is Tuesday, Aug. 31 and it’s the second day of school for MCPS students. Happy learning and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.
1. Walk up Food Distribution: Montgomery County is hosting two food distribution events today. From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., you can stop by Hughes UMC Mid County Hub Food Distributions in Silver Spring; from 2 to 3 p.m., stop by Upcounty Hub Drive-thru Distribution at Church of Nazarene in Gaithersburg. 2. County COVID-19 Testing and Vaccine Clinics: Free COVID-19 testing is available throughout the county at nine testing sites today. Health officials continue to stress the importance of testing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and the infectious Delta variant. Anyone 12 years and older is eligible for a vaccine. Register online to make an appointment at a county-run COVID-19 vaccine clinic. To find another vaccine clinic near you, go to Vaccines.gov.
3. Pups on the Patio: Stop by Silver Diner in Rio with your dog from 3 to 7 p.m. to enjoy a happy hour and dog-themed cocktails. Click here for more information.
4. Library Event: Montgomery County Public Libraries is administering a Northstar Assessment Test from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Score above 85% and you’ll receive a certificate that touts your digital skills which you can showcase in job applications. Click here to register.
5. International Overdose Awareness Day: It is International Overdose Awareness Day and last year Montgomery County lost 108 residents to an opioid drug overdose. MyMCM’s Maryam Shahzad recently covered a candlelight vigil in Rockville paying tribute to those county residents who died from opioids:
