3. Yaldaa: This ceremony on the eve of the winter solstice is traced to the myth of the combat between the forces of light against the forces of darkness. From this day onward, the good forces of light triumph as the days grow longer. Also considered to be the re-birth of the Sun, the celebration involves telling fairy tales and stories, recitation of poetry, the serving of traditional fare including nuts, and the lighting of a bonfire (if permitted), according to the local government release.
In recognition of Montgomery County’s religious, ethnic and cultural diversity and in respect for the diversity of its own workforce, on March 28, 2006, the County Council passed legislation ( Bill No. 1-06: Special Days of Commemoration ) to designate certain days of commemoration relating to the religious, ethnic and cultural heritage of County residents.

5. Winter Lights Festival: More than 450 colorful displays will be showcased across 3.5 miles of Seneca Creek Park. The festival is drive-through only meaning no walking or biking will be allowed. The festival will open Nov. 26 through Dec. 31. Tickets are on sale now and are $15 Monday through Thursday and $25 Friday through Sunday. Directions to the lights can be found here.
