5 Things to Know Today, Jan 9, In Montgomery County

It’s Monday, Jan. 9, and looks like a cloudy day to start the work week. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Traffic Enforcement Public Forum:  The Police Advisory Commission (PAC) is holding a virtual public forum tonight at 6:30 p.m. to get feedback from residents about their experiences with traffic enforcement.

2. Municipal Monday: The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. to receive training on harassment, ethics and open meetings tonight at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend and observe the session. The training packet may be found here online. The Rockville Mayor and Council meet at 7 p.m. for a hybrid session. The agenda and information may be found online. Prior to the meeting, Mayor Newton and Councilmember Mark Pierzchala are available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for a drop in meeting.

3. Winter ESOL Classes: Today at noon, applications become available for the winter session of online English for Speakers of Other Languages classes. Space in the classes is very limited and the classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. More information is available here. The classes are taught by the Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center.

4. (ICYMI) County Coat Distribution: Friday, more than 1,000 winter coats for men, women and children were provided to residents at the Long Branch Community Recreation Center.  A week earlier, the county and partners held a winter coat drive with the goal was to collect or purchase 500 coats to be distributed to residents in need. Participating in the coat drive were Montgomery County Police, Montgomery County Department of Recreation, Silver Spring Cares, Silver Spring Regional Services Center, CHEER and the County Executive Marc Elrich’s office.

5. Silver Spring Transit Center Lane Closures: The second level entrance to the transit center will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers starting today between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day to facilitate Purple Line construction.
