1. New Laws, Fees: The beginning of July means an increase in the minimum wage, Metro fares, tobacco taxes and car registration fees as well as a ban on sales of gas-powered leaf blowers.

2. Swearing-in Ceremony for SMOB: Clarksburg High School’s Praneel Suvarna will be sworn in as the 47th Student Member of the Board of Education at 4 p.m. The ceremony will be streamed live on YouTube and the MCPS website.

3. Municipal Monday:  The Gaithersburg Mayor and Council meet for a regular session at 7:30 p.m. Find the meeting agenda and packet online. The Rockville Mayor and Council do not meet this week. Their next meeting and drop-in session is scheduled for Monday, July 8.

4. Wheaton Mural: Mural artist Bridgit Cimino recently completed a mural on the wall of Elbe’s Beer and Wine along University Boulevard in Wheaton. The colorful mural depicts the history of Wheaton. Take a look.

5. Police Chief Jones Surprise Announcement: Police Chief Marcus Jones may be retiring from the Montgomery County Police Department, but he is not leaving public service.
