5 Things to Know Today, June 17, in Montgomery County

It’s Monday, June 17, and here are five things to know. Check the weather forecast here.

1. Basketball Clinic:  Eric Smith leads a basketball clinic for boys and girls at Cabin John Middle School on the outdoor basketball courts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The free clinic is part of the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival events. Smith, a basketball and football star from Churchill High School, also played for Georgetown University in the 1982 NCAA championship game.

2. Council Committee Meetings: Three council committees meet today. The Public Safety and the Transportation and Environment committees meet at 9:30 a.m. The Planning, Housing and Parks committee meets at 2 p.m. All meetings are open to the public, broadcast live on County Cable Montgomery, and streamed live on YouTube.

3. Council President Briefing: Council President Andrew Friedson’s will hold his weekly media briefing at 11:30 a.m. today. He will discuss various Council matters, including the scheduled vote on appointing the new police chief. Watch the briefing live on the Council’s Facebook page here.

4. County Outdoor Pools: The summer season for the county’s seven outdoor pools started Saturday and continues through Aug. 11. Pools are open from 1 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from noon to 8 p.m. on weekends. The Upper County Outdoor Pool in Gaithersburg closes on Fridays. Summer swim passes are available for purchase.

5. Municipal Monday:  The Gaithersburg Mayor and Council meet at 7:30 p.m. Find the agenda and agenda packet online.  The Rockville Mayor and Council will not meet this week.
