Today is Friday, June 30 and we should expect a partly cloudy day with temperatures near 90 degrees. Here are 5 things to know.
1. Air Quality: The air quality is expected to be Code Orange Friday, meaning it is unhealthy for vulnerable persons to spend extended periods of time outdoors.
2. Friday Night Concert: The Latin band La Unica performs in Downtown Bethesda tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the corner of Norfolk and Del Ray Avenues. Norfolk Avenue is closed to cars from Del Ray to St. Elmo Avenue. Before you go, check the Bethesda Up website in case they cancel due to the air quality.
3. Fourth of July Celebrations and Fireworks: Firework displays are planned for both Saturday, July 1 and Tuesday, July 4. Takoma Park will celebrate with their annual parade on Tuesday, but will not host fireworks this year. The county celebrations are on Saturday, July 1 in Kensington and on Tuesday, July 4 in Germantown.
4. To-Go Cocktails Going Away: Restaurants in Maryland will no longer be allowed to sell takeout or to-go alcohol drinks. The temporary measure allowing the sale of to-go drinks, enacted by the Maryland General Assembly during the pandemic, ends Saturday, July 1.
5. Changes to Maryland Laws: Saturday, July 1, anyone 21 years or older will be able to legally purchase up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis at a Maryland dispensary without a medical card. The cannabis is only legal for home consumption and can not be used in public or even in the dispensary where it was purchased. Also, an automatic increase in the gas tax occurs Saturday, so expect to pay more at the pump.
And One More Thing: Today is Fire Chief Scott Goldstein’s last day before he retires and moves to the West Coast. MCM spoke with Chief Goldstein in April about his more than 30 years service.
