8 Maryland Athletes Competing in 2024 Paralympics in Paris

Paris is hosting the 2024 Paralympics through Sept 8. with 4,400 Paralympic athletes competing for 549 medal events. The 17th Paralympic Summer Games feature athletes with a range of disabilities competing in 22 sports. Paralympics are derived from the Greek word “Para” which means “along,” as the Olympics and Paralympics are parallel to one another. 

Maryland has eight athletes competing in the 2024 Paralympics: 

Noah Hanssen, Fencing , Ellicott City, MD

Hanssen placed 10th in Individual Sabre B. 

Jessica Long, Swimming, Baltimore, MD

Long is a 30-time medalist. Long won the gold medal in the Women’s 400m Freestyle S8, fourth place in the Women’s 200m Medley SM8 and sixth place in Women’s 100m Backstroke S8. She will compete in heat two of the Women’s 100m Butterfly S8 on Saturday. 

Tatyana McFadden, Wheelchair Racing, Clarksville, MD 

McFadden won a silver in the Women’s 100m T54, fourth in the Women’s 800m T54. She will soon compete in the final for the Women’s 400m T54. 

Daniel Romanchuk, Wheelchair Racing, Baltimore, MD

Romanchuk won gold in the Men’s 5000m T54, bronze in the Men’s 400m T54 and ninth in the Men’s 1500m T54. He will compete in the Men’s 800m T54 final soon. 

Lawrence Sapp, Swimmer, Waldorf, MD

Sapp placed sixth in the Men’s 100m Butterfly S14. 

Zach Shattuck, Swimming, Mount Airy, MD

Shattuck was a part of the Mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay that won silver, placed 4th in Heat 1 for the Men’s 50m Butterfly S6 and placed sixth in the Men’s 100m Breastroke SB6 final. 

Trevon Jenifer, Basketball, La Plata, MD

Jenifer will compete in the Men’s Basketball semifinal against Canada. 

Samantha Heyison, Track, Adamstown, MD

Heyison placed fifth in the Women’s Discus Throw F64 final and ninth in the Women’s Shot Put F64 final.
