Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) declared Oct. 4 as Walk to School Day.
“Walking to school is a great way for children to make a positive difference in their communities, promote healthy habits, improve air quality, pedestrian safety, and environmental awareness,” according to a proclamation approved by the Board of Education Thursday.
It also reduces traffic congestion and gives students a chance to practice mindfulness and let them know that walking is part of a healthy lifestyle, according to the proclamation.
School officials throughout the district will be publicizing the day and coordinating events.
