5 Things to Know Today, Oct. 30, In Montgomery County

Today is Monday, Oct. 30 and here are five things to know. Check the weather forecast here.

1. Mental Health Awareness Week: The county’s public schools host events this week to give youth and families the opportunity to hear from mental health experts on a variety of issues. The events, which will be held in person and virtually, will include speakers and workshops, culminating in a virtual resource fair and expert panel on Saturday, Nov. 4.

2. Life Sciences Conference: The Maryland Life Sciences Bio Innovation Conference connects professionals in the region with leading global brands, venture capitalists and promising startups.

3. Municipal Monday:  The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council do not meet for the next two weeks. They resume meetings on Nov. 13 after the city elections. The Rockville Mayor and Council meet at 7 p.m. The agenda with supporting documents is available online.

4. AFI Silent Cinema Showcase: Silver Spring’s AFI Silver Theatre’s selection of newly restored screen classics from the silent era of silent films opened Friday and continues through Nov. 18. Find the list of shows and times here.

5. NIST Breaks Ground for New Robotics Test Facility: The Response Robotics Test Facility will increase NIST’s capabilities for testing the performance of robots used in search and rescue operations, bomb disposal and other public safety emergencies. It is expected to open in 2025.

Two agile robots moved toward a pile of sand, picked up a heap and officially broke ground for a new robotics test facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg Friday.
