The principal of Clarksburg High School will retire from his position effective Jan. 1.
Principal Edward Owusu announced his retirement from the school and from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) on Monday, according to the school district.
The decision to retire has been in contemplation since late summer, per a statement from MCPS.
There was some recent buzz around Clarksburg High School as a student walkout for Palestine was held last week and Owusu reportedly stated in a message to the school community that participation was approved by school leadership. Last Thursday morning, dozens of students left the school and temporarily gathered outside to demand an immediate ceasefire.
“Mr. Owusu has made a difficult but important personal decision to emphasize his family at this time, particularly his son,” according to MCPS. The decision “follows seven years of dedicated service as the school’s principal.”
“Principal Owusu takes immense pride in the substantial growth achieved by both students and the school’s programs under his guidance. His commitment to fostering a positive educational environment has left a lasting impact on the school community.”
In a letter to the school community, Owusu wrote: “This is by far one of the most difficult letters to write to what I consider my extended family. It is with mixed emotions that I announce my decision to retire as the Principal of Clarksburg High School, effective January 1, 2024. This decision comes after much introspection and family discussion.”
Owusu has worked for MCPS for more than 29 years according to his LinkedIn.
