Montgomery Parks’ third annual urban wood sale drew hundreds. The event, held in Gaithersburg Saturday and Sunday, Dec 9 and 10, featured wood salvaged from sick and dying trees in the county’s parkland, including the famed three-century old Linden Oak.
MCM spoke with Montgomery Parks Urban Forester Patrick Harwood at the sale Saturday. Typically about 500 customers attend the sale according to Harwood. He estimated the crowd was much larger.
Montgomery Parks removes hundreds of dead or dying trees from parkland each year, some of which are appropriate for woodworking projects. Numerous species of wood were for sale Saturday, including walnut, cedar, pine, poplar, oak, beech, cherry, cypress, and ash.
Last summer the well-known but dying Linden Oak Tree was removed by the park service. The 300-year old White Oak stood near the intersection of Beach Drive, Grosvenor Lane and Rockville Pike in North Bethesda. Saturday’s sale featured wood salvaged from the Linden Oak.
