Montgomery Blair High School won their National Science Bowl (NSB) regional competition and will compete in the national finals in the spring.
The U.S. Department of Energy sponsors the nationwide academic competition each year. Middle and high school student teams are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format similar to the local “It’s Academic” quiz show. Questions cover a range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, and math.
About 10,000 middle and high school students compete in 65 high school and 50 middle school regional Science Bowl tournaments. The Blair team won their regional competition which included teams from Maryland and D.C. schools. The competition took place at Montgomery College on Jan. 13.
The top two middle and high school teams will win $5,000 for their schools’ math and science departments. Other schools placing in the top 16 in the national finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. The winning team from each qualifying regional competition will be eligible to compete in the national finals held in Washington, D.C., in April.
