Friday, January 26
Ice Skating: Cabin John Ice Rink is one of two indoor skating facilities in Montgomery Parks. Public skating sessions are open seven days a week during the winter, find the full schedule here. Also, ice skating and ice hockey classes and camps are offered for all ages and skill levels. The rink is located at 10610 Westlake Drive in Rockville. General admission fees start at $5. The Grapes of Wrath: Rockville Little Theatre presents this classic drama based on the novel by John Steinbeck. The play follows the Joad family’s epic journey from the dust bowl of Oklahoma to the promised land of California. Performances Friday, Jan 26 at 8 p.m. at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre located at Rockville Civic Center Park, 603 Edmonston Drive. Additional performances include Jan. 27, Feb. 2 and 3 at 8 p.m., Jan 28 and Feb 4 at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. Hansel and Gretel: The Puppet Co. of Glen Echo Park presents the classic German fairy take about two kids who get lost in the woods and encounter a witch. The play runs through Feb. 18 and is recommended for ages 4 and up. The Puppet Co. Playhouse is located within Glen Echo Park at 7300 MacArthur Boulevard; the main parking lot is located at 5801 Oxford Road. Friday’s performance is at 10:30 a.m. General admission tickets are $15. Saturday, January 27
Children’s Percussion & Songs from Africa: The School of Musical Traditions presents a series of drum and song lessons for children ages 4 to 6 on Saturday mornings starting Saturday, Jan. 27. The lessons focus on songs and instruments of the African diaspora. The series of four classes cost $150. The School of Musical Traditions is located at 7112 Willow Ave in Takoma Park. Show Way the Musical: Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences on Tour presents this musical adapted from the book by Jacqueline Woodson. The musical traces seven generations of girls and women in Woodson’s family who were quilters and artists and freedom fighters. This musical is part of Montgomery College’s Saturday Morning Children series. Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Parilla Performing Arts Center located at 51 Mannakee Street in Rockville. Ice Skating: Rockville Town Square outdoor ice skating rink offers fun for the whole family. The rink is open seven days a week, typically from 10 a.m. or noon to 10 p.m. Admission costs start at $11 for a two-hour session. Skates are available to rent for $6. Online registration is the least expensive option and is recommended, but walk-up admission is available when space permits. Ice skating lessons are available. Greenhouse Growing Tour: Join the farmers from Cultivate the City and Plants Alive! for an hour tour of their greenhouse growing space Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Cultivate the City is a local company specializing in organic and pesticide-free hydroponic and vertical farming and ethnic foliage and edible crops. Plants Alive! specializes in plant/decor rentals and houseplant growing. The behind-the-scenes tour includes all of the tips and tricks they employ in their greenhouses that are applicable anywhere. Chili Cook-off: Waredaca Brewing hosts it’s first chili cook-off Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Chili categories include traditional chili, white chicken using ground or shredded chicken, and vegetarian chili with no meat. The cook-off is free to enter by emailing marcus@waredacabrewing.com. Cost to taste and judge is $5. Waredaca Brewing Company is located at 4017 Damascus Road in Laytonsville.
