5 Things to Know Today, Jan 29, In Montgomery County

It’s Monday, Jan. 29 and here are five things to know. Check the weather forecast here.

1. Schools Closed:  Montgomery County Public Schools are closed for students today to help teachers with grading and planning for the end of the term.

2. Council President Briefing: Council President Andrew Friedson’s weekly media briefing is scheduled for today at 11 a.m. Friedson is expected to discuss the Council’s Feb. 8 oversight meeting by the joint Audit and Education and Culture Committee about the Office of Inspector General’s report on Montgomery County Public Schools. He will also cover the Council’s review of the Takoma Park Minor Master Plan Amendment and setting spending affordability guidelines for the County’s fiscal year 2025 operating budget. Watch today’s briefing on the Council’s Facebook page here.

3. Youth Town Hall: Councilmember Natali Fani-González, in collaboration with the newly formed Wheaton/Glenmont Arts and Entertainment Advisory Board, invites middle and hight school youth to a meeting today at the Wheaton Library/Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m. The organizers wish to give the youth a voice to share what they want to see in Wheaton and Glenmont. Lunch and SSL hours will be provided.

4. Municipal Monday:  The Gaithersburg Mayor and Council meet at 7:30 p.m. for a work session on the City’s Harassment Policy, Ethics and Open Meetyings training. The agenda and agenda packet are available online. The Rockville Mayor and Council do not meet tonight. The next Town of Poolesville Commissioners meeting is scheduled in one week for Monday, Feb. 5.

5. Tax Filing Season Opens: Today is the first day to file 2023 income tax returns which are due by Monday, April 15. Here is one reason to file your tax return early. Also, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is offering free tax help for households earning less than $64,000.
