The Montgomery County Council plans to hold a special program Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 11:30 a.m. to commemorate Black History Month.
Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a theme for Black History Month. The theme serves as a focal point for discussions, events, and activities that highlight different aspects of African American history and culture. This year, February will be a celebration of Black History Month with the theme “African Americans and the Arts.”
Tuesday’s program will include a presentation proclaiming February as Black History Month in Montgomery County. A video segment follows with interviews highlighting the many Black influences on our music, cultural movements, dance, and visual arts.
This year’s program recognizes Levi Robinson, a local award-winning artist; Kenneth Smith, Montgomery Blair High School Social Studies teacher who leads a Hip-Hop History and Culture course; and Angela Ingram, a local folklore educator and professional dancer who specializes in ballet, jazz, and tap.
The Council has been doing similar celebrations for Black History Month since 2015. Last year’s commemoration focused on Black Resistance in Montgomery County. Here is the video from the 2023 program:
The program will take place at the Council Office Building on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 11:30 a.m.
Watch the program live on County Cable Montgomery (CCM), Council Facebook page or the Council web site.
