A Maryland woman was found guilty Friday in a 2022 Wheaton-Glenmont crash that killed her 3-year-old daughter.
Danshell Evon, 38, of Bryans Road in Charles County, was convicted of gross negligent manslaughter, four counts of second-degree assault, and one count of neglect of a minor, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
According to information previously shared by police, in May 2022 Evon was driving a Kia Optima at high speed on southbound Connecticut Avenue near Atherton Drive, and collided with a Ford F-150 that was towing a utility trailer.
Evon’s three-year-old daughter, Dreamie Dior Jackson, died as a result of injuries from the crash, according to police.
The child was improperly secured in a backless booster seat, MCSAO stated.
In a written statement, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said, “This heartbreaking loss of such a young member of our community is a tragedy that was easily avoidable. At the speeds the defendant was traveling, she wasn’t driving a car, she was steering a missile down the road in the middle of rush hour. If the barest of common-sense parenting skills were in place, there would have been a proper child safety seat installed.”
According to MCSAO, the event data recorder examined during police investigation revealed Evon “reached speeds in excess of 98 mph in the seconds leading up to the crash.”
Both occupants in the Ford F-150, as well as two 13-year-old passengers in the Kia, had non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
According to MCSAO, a four-day bench trial ended Friday with a judge’s verdict. Evon faces a maximum of 55 years in prison, according to MCSAO. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 9.
