Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) joined with the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armor for a girls’ flag football program beginning this fall.
The partnership provides grant funding for the pilot program that will cover the costs of equipment and Under Armor uniforms for each of the districts 25 high schools. The money also will be used to cover stipends for coaching, transportation and awards.
MCPS has not had a girls’ flag football team before this.
“We are excited to be part of the expansion of girls’ flag football in Maryland, as we strive to provide additional participation opportunities for our student-athletes in Montgomery County Public Schools,” said Jeff Sullivan, director of systemwide athletics at MCPS.
“Girls’ flag continues to thrive across the country and we look forward to partnering with the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armour to bring this excitement to our 25 high schools in Montgomery County. This initiative is directly aligned with our R.A.I.S.E. core values of equity, access, and spirited competition and will provide a springboard of success for flag football across our county, he wrote in a news release.
Coaching positions will be posted in the near future on MCPS Careers.
Informational meetings will be held during May and skills clinics will be hosted at MCPS schools in early June.
The other two Maryland districts participating in the pilot program are Baltimore City and Washington County public schools.
