A driver was killed and a passenger severely injured in a crash July 16 in Takoma Park that police believe began as an assault.
Takoma Park Police responded to Walnut and Eastern avenues after hearing sounds of a car crash at 10:50 p.m. They found a 1997 Subaru that had crashed into a tree and spun around.
Both adult males in the car were transported a local hospital where the driver was pronounced dead and the passenger was listed in critical condition, according to police.
Police found two handguns, drugs and cash. Following an investigation, police learned that shots had been fired into a vehicle that was speeding away from the Washington D.C. side of Walnut Avenue toward Eastern Avenue.
The Washington Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the assault, which happened in its jurisdiction. Members of the Montgomery County Police Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the fatal accident.
The names of the passengers have not been released.
