Body Missing Since Friday Found in Potomac River

Montgomery County Police’s Managed Search Operations Team members believe they have found the body of a swimmer who has been missing since May 24.

According to Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, a body was recovered in the Potomac River around 8 a.m. Memorial Day at Sandy Landing, south of Great Falls.

A couple of people started to swim from Virginia to Maryland when one of the swimmers became distressed. Officials have been looking for the swimmer since then.

On Sunday, a body stuck in the rocks was located through the use of sonar, Piringer said. By the time rescue workers returned Monday to retrieve the body, a kayaker had reported seeing a body in the Potomac near the boat ramp by Old Angler’s Inn, Piringer said.

“We believe it to be the swimmer,” he said, adding that a death investigation is underway.
