A Pride flag went up outside the Executive Office Building in Rockville in an annual event to mark Pride Month.
County leaders raised the flag Monday for a sixth year. This year, they raised an Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag, which includes a yellow space with a purple circle.
For the second year, the county’s #RideWithPride Ride On bus will be on the road this month.
Councilmember Evan Glass, the county’s first openly gay councilmember, said that while the county proudly celebrates Pride, not everyone in the U.S. or in the general area “faces the same celebratory and welcoming community that we have here.”
“Just last month, a legal case involving Montgomery County Public Schools — a legal case against a proposal that was to support inclusion and diversity — made its way up to the Supreme Court, which declined to hear that case,” Glass said Monday. “And I will add it was probably the wisest decision that the Supreme Court has made recently.”
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to review an appeal challenging Montgomery County Public Schools’ gender identity guidelines.
