Work on the 16-mile Purple Line is more than 60% complete and still scheduled to transport passengers by the end of 2027.
Maryland Transit Administration officials briefed members of the Montgomery County Council’s Transportation and Environment Committee Monday, noting that 14 of the 21 stations are under construction.
Also, the officials announced, the Capital Crescent Trail still is scheduled to reopen in the Spring of 2026.
Most recently, crews have built most of the cavern ceiling leading into the Bethesda Metro station and installed utilities and platform canopies at the Silver Spring Transit Center station.
The Connecticut Avenue, Lyttonsville and Glen Ridge station platforms are almost complete as is the tunnel extension between Wayne Avenue and the Manchester Place station.
Much work is being undertaken at Dale Drive and Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring with the goal of completing it by the start of school so as not to endanger students walking to and from the nearby Silver Spring International Middle School, the Purple Line officials explained.
Council Vice President Kate Stewart urged officials to keep that area passable and safe during construction. As a runner who often travels through this area, “There are days when it is not passable for me to run, and I have to go into traffic,” she said.
Crews are laying 8,000 feet of embedded track each month, according to the briefing.
“Progress is good and it is disruptive,” noted Committee Chair Evan Glass.
