During the Fourth of July, an electrical fire that started in the kitchen ceiling caused “significant damage” to the kitchen and bathroom areas of Interfaith Work’s women’s shelter.
No one was injured, but 34 residents at the Women’s Center at Crabbs Branch in Derwood were relocated temporarily. They are not expected to be able to return for at least two months.
Smoke was coming from the eaves and fire from the attic area above the bathrooms when Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) personnel arrived. The fire started when a fan motor overheated in the attic, according to Pete Piringer, spokesperson for MCFRS.

Interfaith Works is asking anyone who can to help to make a contribution to help cover the cost of replacing supplies and staff equipment and allow residents to do their laundry and obtain transportation.
Hot and prepared meals also are needed daily as there is no kitchen in the temporary facility. Contact Interfaith Works Director of Faith and Community Partnerships Roslyn Roberts at 240-468 -6386 for details.
As of Friday evening, Interfaith Works had received $510 in donations.
