When the Montgomery County Council meets Tuesday, members are expected to speak out in favor of resolutions supporting racial equity, social justice as well as reproductive freedom.
The council expects to introduce a commitment statement that “affirms that racial equity and social justice are core values.”
If approved, the council would work “to achieve racial equity and social justice by dismantling the policies, practices, and systems of oppression, wealth, and privilege that have developed and sustained these inequities and injustices.”
Vice President Kate Stewart is expected to introduce the resolution to reaffirm council’s commitment to reproductive rights and recommend that its county agencies “pursue opportunities and coordinate with each other to protect people or entities providing, assisting, seeking, or obtaining reproductive health services in Montgomery County.”
The resolution also calls on the county to support a Maryland constitutional amendment to protect the right to reproductive freedom and encourage residents to vote in favor of the constitutional amendment in the November election.
Stewart is sponsoring this resolution, and the other 10 council members are cosponsors.
Both matters will be voted on during a September council meeting.
