At the end of August, Gonzalez Research and Media Services conducted a poll in the Congressional District 6 race. According to their results, candidates April McClain Delaney and Neil Parrott are locked in a tight race.
The poll has Parrott leading with 41% and McClain Delaney with 39%. 20% of voters remain undecided. The poll has a plus or minus 5.6% margin of error.
Congressional District 6 spans several Maryland counties including Montgomery County, Frederick County and three Western Maryland counties – Washington, Allegany and Garrett.
Delaney finds her stronghold in Montgomery County, where she leads 61% to 19%. Conversely, Parrott holds a commanding 75% to 15% advantage in the western counties .
Overall, 73% of the 374 likely voters in the poll who identify as Democrats prefer Delaney. 72% of Republicans would vote for Parrott. Among independents, Parrott leads 34% to 31%.
Poll participants were reached by live telephone interviews using both landline and cell phone numbers.
According to further analysis of the numbers from this poll, name recognition may be a bigger issue for Delaney with 51% of potential voters unaware of who she was compared to 34% for Parrott.
