Everyone Wins at Takoma Park Pie Contest

On Sunday Takoma Park held its annual Pie Contest. The Farmers’ Market invited home and professional bakers to submit their best one or two crust sweet or savory pies using seasonal ingredients available at the Market.

There was plenty of competition with about 50 pies received every year.

After the judging, market goers could buy a piece of pie for $4. The money goes to support the market’s Federal Benefit Match Program which allows shoppers to buy fresh, local food. Since its beginning, the contest has raised over $10,000 for the cause.

Pie categories include Apple, Peach, Other Sweet, Other Savory, Kids, Professional Baker, Unusual and Yummy Mess. Apple submissions were by far the most numerous.
