Hillandale Gateway held its groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday in Silver Spring. The development is Maryland’s first net zero energy multifamily apartments. The project’s mission is to provide affordable housing to low and moderate-income families in Montgomery County.
There will be 463 units across two residential buildings that are all electric, mixed use and mixed income. One of the buildings will be age-restricted, for seniors aged 62 and above. There will also be public site amenities and a transit station
“Hillandale Gateway will provide much-needed opportunities for our most vulnerable populations, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families facing financial challenges” said Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller in a tweet.
The $303 million project will feature a solar power system, and completely power the 155 age-restricted affordable homes and make it one of the largest zero net energy projects in the country.
