State Attorney General’s Office Investigating After Officer Fatally Shoots Man in Wheaton


According to authorities, a county police officer shot a man while responding to a call in Wheaton on Saturday.

Under Maryland law the state Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division will investigate.

According to the state Attorney General’s Office, at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday county police responded to the 3400 block of Janet Road for a reported assault in progress. Officers encountered a man in a yard “holding an object” in his hand. Officers shouted commands to “drop the knife” but the man did not comply and started crossing the street. One officer used his service weapon and shot the man.

According to county police, the man was approaching the officer and victims he allegedly assaulted earlier.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Attorney General’s Office, a grill fork was recovered near his body.

No officers were injured. Officer body-worn cameras recorded the shooting and footage may be released as soon as within 20 business days of the shooting.
