Wootton beat Gaithersburg 17-14 Thursday night with a field goal in overtime in a nail-biting finish to MCM’s Game of the Week..
In the first quarter, Gaithersburg reached the end zone first on a pick six from senior Jaden Washington to put the Trojans up 7-0.
Wootton’s defense sacked Gaithersburg quarterback Antonio Reyes three times in the second quarter alone, and five times total.
Patriots QB Hunter Humphries connected with Thomas Meheler for a touchdown in the third quarter tying the game at 7-7.
The Trojans took the lead 14-7 on Reye’s 31-yard pass to junior WR Izzy Walker.

With 10:30 left in the fourth quarter, Humphries found WR Evan Bush in the end zone to tie the game up 14-14.
Wootton had two chances to take the lead in the final two minutes.
After missing a field goal to take the lead, Wootton got a another chance. As time was running out in regulation, an offsides call on Gaithersburg allowed the Patriots a second attempt. Greg-obi missed the field goal sending the game to overtime tied at 14-14.

In the extra period, Gaithersburg was driving until a holding call turned the ball over to Wootton, giving them a third shot at redemption. This time, they took advantage when Greg-Obi kicked the game-winning 17-yard field goal. Final score: Wootton 17, Gaithersburg 14.

But after the win, Wootton’s work was not done. Patriots’ head coach Ivan Hicks made sure the team did their part to stay for cleanup at the end of the game.
“We’re going to stay here together like a family,” said Hicks.
Next up for Wootton (2-2): an away game against Walter Johnson Friday at 6:30 pm. Gaithersburg (1-3) is set to face off against Sherwood on Friday at 6:30 pm.
