A Rockville defendant pleaded guilty to charges in the Montgomery County Circuit Court for a scheme to steal three 1-kilo gold bars from an elderly Silver Spring resident.
Ranvinklejeet Mathon pleaded guilty to the charges of attempted theft over $100,00 and conspiracy to commit theft over $100,000 according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO). He faces a maximum of 40 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec 11. 2024.
Mathon was involved in a scheme to steal three 1-kilo gold bars valued at approximately $229,848 from an elderly man who was targeted in a phone scam. The victim deceived into converting his savings into gold bars who believed he was handing it over to “federal agents”
Authorities believe the scam is a part of an international organized crime ring. There have been other similar gold bar scams reported in Montgomery County and across the nation. On Aug. 12, 2024, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy hosted a joint news conference with Montgomery County Police, the FBI Baltimore Field Office and Homeland Security Investigations to share information to the public about these scams.
“This is organized crime on an international level, and vulnerable victims in our community are being targeted. We understand the devastating nature of this form of fraud and the State will seek a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the offense,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
