In Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon, four county residents finished in the top 20 of their respective categories. According to the Department of Defense, over 23,000 participants showed up for the 49th edition of the marathon.
The marathon is contested in and around Washington, D.C, passing through Rosslyn, Georgetown, Crystal City, Capitol Hill, and more. Click here for the full map.
In the women’s marathon, Krystyna Rytel finished 19th of 6,043. The Chevy Chase native crossed the line in under 3 hours, running a 2:58:14. Her time was good for 255th of the 16,178 who competed in the marathon regardless of gender. Kaari Liisi Linask of Rockville also finished in the top 100 for women. She collected a 95th place finish and 2nd place in the female Grand Masters category for her 3:14:17 run.
In the men’s division, Silver Spring native Tekletsion Tefera did one spot better. Tefera ran a 2:34:04, beating Washington, D.C. native Trevor Reed by a single second in a battle for 18th of 10,135 men. County participants in the handcycle competition also found success. Bethesda’s Stephanie Borinsky placed 9th in the women’s competition.
