Takoma Park Police collected 353 pounds of unused medications as part of the during Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Oct. 26.
Last year, the department collected 301.4 pounds.
According to Chief Antonio DeVaul, residents dropped off unused and unexpired medications during the previous six months leading up to Take-Back Day. The goal is to prevent pill abuse and theft.
Police are continuing to collect the medications, which can be dropped off in the green mailbox in the department’s lobby at 7500 Maple Avenue. Unwanted and unused prescriptions, non-prescription drugs, patches, ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and pet medications are eligible and can be delivered 24 hours a day.
Vape pens and e-cigarette devices are accepted once the batteries are removed.
Loose pills, liquids, inhalers, aerosol cans, regular household ointments/lotions, needles/sharps and/or thermometers are not eligible.
