For almost 40 years, Gene’s Costumes in Kensington has been outfitting Halloween revelers. It has become the go-to place for many – especially for those looking for last minute costumes. But as of Wednesday – the day before Halloween – the Connecticut Avenue shop remains closed after a fire in January.
MCM wanted to know how the business was doing since a Google search showed it was not open and the web domain for the shop was no longer valid.
Reached through Facebook, the owner told MCM “…we had a fire in the basement of our building on January 2. We have no heat or electricity in our building since then. We were told we needed to remove everything from the building for the county to come and inspect. Today is October 30 and I have not heard anything about when this is happening or how long I can expect this process to take. Once that does happen we have work to do in the basement to be able to reopen. Hopefully soon but no idea.”
Gene’s Costumes has a Go Fund Me page and, in their words, “…could still use any help people are able to give.”
