Angela Alsobrooks defeated former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Ben Cardin, who held the seat since 2007.
Alsobrooks, a Democrat, becomes Maryland’s first ever Black senator. She is currently the County Executive for Prince George’s County. Hogan, a Republican, was Maryland’s governor for two terms from 2015-2023.
Alsobrooks said on X, “From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every Marylander. To serve this state, my home, is the honor of a lifetime.”
Hogan said on X, “I want to congratulate County Executive Alsobrooks on a hard-fought victory. Tonight, regardless of who you voted for, we can all take pride in the election of the first Black woman to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate.”
There was a packed ballroom Tuesday night for Alsobrooks’ watch party at The Hotel at The University of Maryland in College Park.
“I stand here tonight for all those people who dream of a better day,” Alsobrooks said after her victory. “We stand tonight united as one Maryland.”
Governor Wes Moore said, “Angela Alsobrooks will fight every single day for the values we cherish as Americans – from the ability to have economic mobility and own more than you owe, to the freedom of feeling safe in your own skin and your own community, to having control over personal health care decisions.
“Maryland is better because of Angela Alsobrooks – and the United States Congress will be better because of her presence too. I knew that when I endorsed her, and I feel just as strongly today. Her fight is our fight.”
