Maryland continues to stand out for its generosity, ranking sixth among the most charitable U.S. states in WalletHub’s latest report. The personal-finance site evaluated 17 metrics, such as income donated and volunteer rates, to rank states on their charitable behavior.
WalletHub’s findings show Maryland excelled in charitable giving, ranking second in this category and placing first in the percentage of residents who donate money. The state scored well in other areas, too, taking 10th for charities per capita and 14th for volunteer hours per person. Maryland’s volunteer rate ranked 29th, indicating that while financial contributions are high, fewer residents donate their time.
The top 10 most charitable states in WalletHub’s ranking (1-10) are Wyoming, Utah, Minnesota, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, Oregon, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska.
WalletHub’s analysis used data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Corporation for National and Community Service, and Giving USA to assess each state’s charitable behavior.
The U.S. ranked sixth worldwide in the 2023 World Giving Index, with Americans donating nearly $560 billion to charity, 67% from individuals. Additionally, about 61 million people volunteered across the country, contributing a total of 4.1 billion hours of service, equivalent to $122.9 billion.
