The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) annual leaf vacuuming program continues from now through December.
MCDOT posts signs along streets directing residents to the 2024 Montgomery County Vacuum Leaf Collection Program to check their scheduled collection, according to a press release. Residents can also use the MC311 online chatbot and Monty 2.0 to check the leaf collection for their area.
Residents need to pile leaves near the street but off the roads, sidewalks and bike lanes. Leaving the leaves in those areas poses a safety hazard for cyclists and pedestrians, a fire hazard for vehicles parked over them, impacts stormwater drainage and disrupts traffic, according to the release.
The leaf vacuum collection district covers an area south of BelPre Road, east of I-270/I-495 and west of New Hampshire Avenue, to the District line as shown below:
MCDOT said two collections are scheduled for each collection district street. The collections will continue through December in specified areas.
MCDOT said residents who miss the collections or do not live within the leaf vacuum district could place their leaves in paper yard trim bags or reusable containers for pick up on their regular recycling and yard trim collection day.
County Executive Marc Elrich said, “Fall is a beautiful time of year in Montgomery County, and as trees shed their leaves the County is here to help. The County offers this free service to residents to keep our infrastructure clear and offer a sustainable solution to leaf disposal. Leaves collected by our crews will be composted and mulched at a local facility. And, we offer information on the benefits of leaving leaves on site.”
