Caroline Freeland Urban Park in Bethesda reopened with renovations over the weekend. According to Montgomery Parks, the $3.3 million renovation includes a new playground, seating areas and accessible paths. MCM talked with park-goers Thursday.
The park is on Arlington Road between the Connie Morella Library and the Giant grocery store.
In a release, Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo stated, “We are so proud of the renovated Caroline Freeland Park. The combination of the new playground and seating areas in this location furthers Montgomery Parks mission to create spaces where people of all ages can gather and enjoy physical activity and develop social connections.”
Caroline Freeland was the first female chair of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
Freeland’s granddaughter, Megan Raymond, stated, “My grandmother would have been so thrilled to see the generations that gathered to celebrate the park’s reopening. She was wheelchair-bound in her later years, and it would’ve been incredible to wheel her along the park’s accessible pathways to see this new design. The new layout now closely links the park to the library next door, which is named for a long-time friend of my grandmother’s, former Congresswoman Connie Morella.”
