U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-8) has let his fellow Congressmembers know that he is running to be the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee. He will challenge Rep. Jerry Nadler, a Democrat representing New York.
A ranking member is the most senior member of the minority party. Currently, Raskin is ranking member of the Committee on Oversite and Accountability.
If Raskin becomes the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, he will be in position to lead the opposition against actions by President-Elect Donald Trump.
In a lengthy letter Monday, Raskin wrote, “We are in the fight of our lives.”
When Trump becomes president next month, Raskin expects “cavalier lawlessness and contempt for the Constitution.”
According to Raskin, President-Elect Donald Trump’s second term will be worse than his first, “[T]his time the MAGA movement has not only a trifecta but a complicit Supreme Court waiting in the wings and a dominant media propaganda system parroting all the lies.”
In his letter, which was sent to MCM, Raskin said he consulted with colleagues before opting to run for a position “where we will wage our front-line defense of the freedoms and rights of the people, the integrity of the Department of Justice and the FBI, and the security of our most precious birthright possessions: the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the rule of law, and democracy itself.”
