New Council President’s Priorities Include Economy, Housing, Inclusivity

New County Council President Kate Stewart’s priorities for the year ahead include growing the county’s economy and presence as a life sciences hub, boosting affordable housing, and – with a changing federal administration – amplifying services that “advance us and continue our work as a welcoming and inclusive community here in Montgomery County.”

Stewart mentioned racial equity, LGBTQ+ services, immigration rights, and a focus on the federal workforce.

Additional priorities include a continued focus on having a strong public school system, partnerships with Montgomery College and the Universities at Shady Grove, and mental health issues.

Last week councilmembers unanimously elected Stewart as president and Will Jawando as vice president. Stewart was previously vice president alongside former Council President Andrew Friedson. The council president and vice president each serve a one-year term.
