Cardin Praised For 58 Years of Public Service

As U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin winds down his 58 years of legislating in Annapolis and Washington, D.C., he expressed optimism that Maryland “will be in good hands.”

He opted not to run for reelection.

“As I now leave elected office, I know we are going to be in good hands. Angela Alsobrooks is going to be an outstanding senator,” he told an admiring crowd gathered at Wednesday’s Jewish Community Relations Council breakfast.

While many speakers took time out to thank Cardin for his service, he declared, “I want to thank you…Thank you for giving me that honor.”

Alsobrooks, who was elected to his seat in Congress, praised Cardin. “To say thank you is an understatement.”

She praised Cardin for “the grace that he has shown” and the personal mentoring she has received from his since announcing her candidacy.

“I have personally benefitted from his expertise,” Alsobrooks said.

U.S. Rep. Elect April Mclain-Delaney, who was elected to fill the seat currently held by Rep. David Trone, called Cardin “a public servant and a leader. I can only hope that I can do one-tenth of what he has done.”
