As uncertainty continues after recent immigration-related executive orders from President Donald Trump, County Council President Kate Stewart stressed that county police do not enforce federal immigration laws — “Because we need to continue to build trust in our community to prevent and to solve crimes.”
“And if we are unable to do that, then we are not able to talk to our community/find out more about when crime does occur,” she said during a media briefing Monday.
Stewart talks with police leadership on a regular basis — “What we have been talking about is making sure, again, that we keep our mission of public safety and building trust in the community front and center for everyone, and that is what our police department is doing.”
County Executive Marc Elrich clarified last week that while leaders aim to keep residents safe, police will not obstruct arrests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
