The City of Gaithersburg will honor Black History Month with educational programs, exhibits, and a formal proclamation throughout February. The annual celebration highlights the achievements of African Americans and their contributions to U.S. history.
Black History Month, established in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, is observed nationwide every February. Woodson chose the month to honor Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays fall in February.
On February 3, the Mayor and City Council will officially proclaim February 2025 as Black History Month. Reverend Timothy Warner of Emory Grove Methodist Church will accept the proclamation. Rev. Warner, a Wesley Theological Seminary graduate, is recognized for his leadership and advocacy for marginalized communities. His accolades include the Harry S. Denman Evangelism Award and the NACo Neighborhood Opportunity Network Award.
