Council Celebrates Black History Month with Labor Movement Tribute

The Montgomery County Council will host its annual Black History Month commemoration on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 11:30 a.m. The event will highlight the national theme, “African Americans and Labor.”

The commemoration will feature a proclamation presentation and video interviews showcasing Black Americans’ contributions to the labor movement. The event will recognize Lisa Blackwell-Brown, secretary and treasurer of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO; Karl Smith, vice president of the AAUP Montgomery College Chapter; and Pia Morrison, president of SEIU Local 500.

The Council has hosted Black History Month commemorations since 2015. Last year’s event focused on African Americans and the Arts in Montgomery County.

The commemoration will take place in the Council Hearing Room on the third floor of the Council Office Building. Residents can stream the event live or watch later on the Council’s YouTube and Facebook pages. It will also be televised on County Cable Montgomery.
