County Launches Climate Smart Campaign

Montgomery County has launched a Climate Smart Campaign to inform residents about what they can do to help the environment.

There is a place on the campaign’s website to take a pledge and commit to helping reduce the county’s emissions.

County Executive Marc Elrich stressed that while the President Donald Trump Administration plans to emphasize fossil fuels, Montgomery County will continue to stress electric vehicles, windmills and other forms of energy.

Sarah Kogel-Smucker, climate change officer for Montgomery County, said the goal of the campaign is to get residents to start small and make big changes. These changes can include wasting less food, composting food waste, driving an electric car and planting trees, she said.

She cited a survey that said 77% of county residents are worried about global warming, but only 47% of resident talk about global warming at least occasionally.

“This campaign is really about inspiring people to take action,” said Jon Monger, county director of the Department of Environment Protection.
